our approach
Every control system eventually becomes someone else’s responsibility. When the engineer who built it moves on, what’s left is either a well-documented platform your team can run with confidence, or a black box nobody wants to touch.
We design PLC, DCS and SCADA systems the way we’d want to inherit them ourselves: clearly architected, properly documented and built on a control philosophy that matches how your plant actually runs.
Working across every major automation platform means we recommend what fits your operation, not what we’re contracted to sell. That independence shapes every decision we make, from initial concept through to commissioning and long-term support.
WHAT WE DEVILVER
From first concept to long-term support, six areas of capability that cover the full lifecycle of a control system.
01 – design & build
A control system is only as good as the philosophy behind it. We start with the functional specifications and control narratives that define how the plant should behave, then design PLC, DCS, SCADA and HMI systems around that logic rather than retrofitting logic around convenient hardware. The result is a system your operators trust and your engineers can maintain.
What this covers:
02 – integrate & commission
Historian, DCS, SCADA and ERP rarely arrive from the same vendor, and integration is where most projects lose time. We design the network and fieldbus architecture that connects these systems cleanly, then run FAT and SAT testing that catches problems on the bench, not during commissioning.
What this covers:
03 – secure & sustain
OT networks were rarely designed with security in mind, and every additional connected device widens the exposure. We architect industrial networks and harden control system cybersecurity so your plant stays connected without becoming the entry point an attacker is looking for. Edge control adds real-time decision-making where latency matters most.
What this includes:
04 – modernise
Ageing platforms and undocumented tribal knowledge are one of the biggest risks on a mine site. We assess what’s there, recover or rebuild the documentation that’s missing, and modernise control systems in stages that fit your production schedule, not the other way around.
What this includes:
05 – main automation contracting
When automation scope is split across multiple vendors, the problems usually show up in the interfaces between them, not within any one contractor’s work.
As Main Automation Contractor (MAC), Mipac takes single-point responsibility for the full automation, control and E&I scope on a project, from front-end engineering through to commissioning and handover, so the gaps get caught before they reach site.
What this includes:
06 – functional safety
On car dumpers, stackers, reclaimers, conveyors and process plant alike, a poorly engineered safety system is the difference between a controlled shutdown and an incident. We deliver IEC 61508/61511-aligned functional safety across the full lifecycle, from hazard and risk assessment through SIL determination to SIL-rated safety system design, verification and validation.
What this includes:
proof, not promises
Engaged by Anglo American’s Quellaveco operations team to support the start-up of its new copper concentrator – selected for Mipac’s Siemens PCS7 expertise and copper concentration process knowledge. The site sits 3,500m above sea level in southern Peru, one of the largest greenfield copper operations built in recent years.
●Anglo American · Quellaveco, Peru
As part of (previous owner) Teck Coal’s RACE 21 transformation program, Mipac modernised the Greenhills control system in place. The new autostart logic alone cut plant start-up time by 45 minutes, saving roughly half a million dollars every shutdown.
●EVR · British Columbia, Canada
As Main Automation Contractor on First Quantum’s Cobre Panama mega-project, Mipac designed, engineered and deployed the plantwide control system and HMI on Siemens PCS7, layering custom graphics over the standard libraries so operators got clear, exception-based visibility into a plant generating an enormous volume of data. The plant exceeded nameplate capacity within three months of first ore.
